Wear makes no difference

dusty cover of a faded editorial
dirty window shows the world at it's best
day old coffee sits in it's cradle
lines sag on your face in their usual place
sunken-in seat at your usual diner
waitress-turned-forty greets you with weary smile
smog rains on traffic
fires in old trashcans
what is your life what is this life

welcome to this land of a few million faceless
we'll drag you down to our level quite soon
leave all your memories of loving romances
don't bother with cheering us up with a smile
welcome to this city which houses the hopeless
enjoy for you will not be leaving too soon
you have no face here no place of distinction
wear makes no difference so bear us with style

dreams faded long ago written in stone
which acid rain covered a long time ago
news on at six o' clock predicting your doom
the parks are unsafe in the late afternoon
sallow-faced lovers cling in their embrace
a woman walks nervously clutching some mace
weary bones groan creak and they moan
you rest against time and death's at your elbow
how did you get here well don't bother now
this is your life this was always your life

welcome to this land of a few million faceless
we'll drag you down to our level quite soon
leave all your memories of loving romances
don't bother with cheering us up with a smile
welcome to this city which houses the hopeless
enjoy for you will not be leaving too soon
you have no face here no place of distinction
wear makes no difference so bear us with style

and on we drudge
rusting in our tragedy
so alone so alone
in deranged comfort
stagnation is home
